The Hidden Cost of Looking Unprofessional Online

Professional branding photography helps people trust your business before you’ve even spoken.

Every business owner wants more enquiries, more visitors to their website and, ultimately, more clients. We spend time improving our SEO, posting on social media, asking for reviews and networking, all in the hope that more people will discover our business. But have you ever stopped to think about what happens once they find you? More importantly, have you considered what they see before they’ve read a single word about what you do?

The reality is that people make incredibly quick decisions. Whether they’re browsing your website, looking at your LinkedIn profile or checking out your Google Business Profile, they’re already forming an opinion within seconds. They haven’t looked at your testimonials, compared your services or checked your qualifications. They’re simply asking themselves one question: “Does this business look like someone I’d trust?”

It’s something we all do, even if we’d rather admit we don’t. Think about the last time you were looking for a solicitor, an accountant or somewhere nice to eat. Chances are you dismissed at least one option before you’d really explored it, simply because something about it didn’t feel right. It wasn’t necessarily the business itself that put you off; it was the impression it created.

The same thing happens every day with our own businesses, and that’s the hidden cost of looking unprofessional online. I’ve worked with countless business owners who are outstanding at what they do, yet their online presence tells a completely different story. Outdated headshots, poorly lit mobile phone pictures or generic stock images don’t mean they’re any less capable, but they can create just enough uncertainty for a potential client to click away and look elsewhere. The hardest part is that you’ll never know it happened. Nobody sends an email saying, “I nearly contacted you, but your photographs didn’t fill me with confidence.” They simply move on.

This is why I believe professional branding photography has very little to do with vanity and everything to do with trust. Whether you’re investing in personal bring photography, updating your website or refreshing your marketing materials, the goal is exactly the same: your photographs should reflect the quality of the business you’ve worked so hard to build. Professional headship are often the starting point, but strong branding photography goes much further by showing how you work, how your interact with clients and what it’s genuinely like to do business with you.

Working with business across Norfolk, Suffolk, East Anglia and London, I’ve seen first-hand how often successful compiles are bing held back by imagery that no longer represent who they are. The business has evolved, the service has improved and the reputation has grown, but the photographs haven’t kept pace.

I saw exactly this with a recent client whose business had grown significantly over the past few years. Their reputation was excellent, their client base was expanding and they were delivering a fantastic service, yet the photographs they were using no longer represented who they were. After updating their branding images, nothing about the business itself had changed, but everything became more consistent. The confidence people experienced when they met them was finally reflected online, and that’s where professional photography really earns its keep.

So I’d encourage you to take five minutes today and look at your own online presence through the eyes of someone who has never heard of your business before. Forget what you know about your experience, your reputation and your expertise. If you landed on your website today, would your photographs reassure you that you’re in the right place? Because before anyone buys your product or service, they’re deciding whether they trust you, and more often than not, that decision starts with what they see.
